Happy Friday! Do you ever reread books? Last year, I finished reading Jane Austen’s six major novels. There’s a sense of finality about it... I have so many classics on my TBR that I don’t know if I’ll ever reread my favourite Austen novels (Pride and Prejudice and Emma) anytime soon. Luckily, her novels are timeless, and I’m in no rush. If you’re interested in joining a readalong, I suggest you check out ! 👒 I found this lovely edition of Pride and Prejudice at a used book sale a few weeks ago. It was published by E.P. Dutton and Company in 1976. Swipe to see more → 👒 Secondhand OTP (Lizzie and Darcy!) Recent book purchase Fave opening line Classic 👒 . . . . . #classicbook

Favourite adult novels (top ten), No. 5: House of Mirth – Edith Wharton. This is a novel I love for its observations. It’s about a young woman, Lily Bart, who is “so evidently the victim of the civilization which had produced her, that the links of her bracelet seemed like manacles chaining her to her fate.” In a quiet, lady-like way she rebels against her social confinements. Lily’s father is a wealthy man whose business fails. He dies leaving his wife and daughter virtually penniless. Lily has been educated for making a good marriage, and this is her primary goal in life. However, she unconsciously sabotages her chances several times, most notably because she loves a poor lawyer, Lawrence Selden. While Lily and Selden are dallying, there is a second, equally hopeless romance being played out. Gerty Farish is Selden’s cousin and in love with him, but he doesn’t see it, because he is blinded by a woman more beautiful, though less suitable, in Lily. Wharton’s exquisite writing is so poignant in these moments. “It was at this point, perhaps, that a joy just trying its wings in Gerty’s heart dropped to earth and lay still. … The little confidential room, where a moment ago their thoughts had touched elbows like their chairs, grew to unfriendly vastness, separating her from Selden by all the length of her new vision of the future.” But the novel is on a bigger scale than just doomed romance. It includes commentary on all aspects of New York society in the Edwardian era. There is plenty to amuse, and Edith Wharton’s wit is often scathing of her own kind. “Mrs Gryce had a kind of impersonal benevolence: cases of individual need she regarded with suspicion, but she subscribed to Institutions when their annual reports showed an impressive surplus.” Lily slowly succumbs to the cruelty of her social milieu and the whims of fate, but she leaves a legacy of disquiet for the people who’ve known her, in the same way that Wharton’s great novel leaves a legacy of disquiet for posterity. #classicbook

As the man who has had his taste educated to love reading, falls devouringly upon books after a long, abstinence, so these poor fellows, whose taste had been left to educate themselves into a liking for tobacco, beer, and similar gratifications, gleamed up at the proposal of the London delegate. Tobacco and drink deaden the pangs of hunger, and make one forget the miserable home, the desolate future. ~ Mary Barton, Elizabeth Gaskell •~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~I'm ready for week two of the read along with @thenobbylife.
