Fish or sponge?? In this photo it is pretty clear, but without external strobes, under natural light conditions, a red frogfish (Antennarius pictus) really looks like a browny sponge. #coraltriangle

Let's dive Indonesia 👌 The Coral Triangle is one of the greatest centres of biodiversity on Earth. This region has more species of corals, fish, mangroves, seagrasses, and many other taxa than any other marine area on the planet 💦 . . . . #coraltriangle

A Bigfin Reef Squid (Sepioteuthis lessoniana) hovers in the water column on a night dive in Indonesia's Lembeh Strait. If you look closely, you can see the - or pigment-containing cells just beneath the surface of the skin - that allow the squid to rapidly change color. This squid changed from the gold color you see here, to a glacial blue, and back again within seconds. No matter the color, the fine details of squid always look great against a clean black background.⠀

F I S H - A school of black surgeon fish grazing algae in Haru Ina, off Beloi’s beach, on Ataúro Island (Timor Leste). This specie is registered in Reef Check surveys, because it is a coral reef health indicator. Same for groupers, snappers, parrot fish, etc. Marine ecosystems are complex and fragile. Surveys aim at collecting data to monitor them and help decision makers to protect them. @beyondconservation triangle

Why is the #Coraltriangle very diverse? . . Some scientists believe that it is a major center of origin for coral reef species, where species originated and dispersed to other locations in the Indo-Pacific Region. . . While others believe that it is due to an overlapping or accumulation of faunas from the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Geological processes have also played an important role, with coral reef species evolving and persisting during low sea level events, demonstrating the resilient and enduring nature of these reefs during prior periods of climate change.
