Macbeth. • In 1746,, Samuel Johnson, one of the greatest literary figures of the 18th century, (referred to as the Good Doctor,) began work on his monumental Dictionary of the English Language . It took him nine years...(although in a moment of foolish bravado..promised three!!) Johnson was already an established 'man of letters', famous for his epitaphs, parliamentary debates, translations of the Odes of his favourite poet, Horace, numerous essays and for his epic poem, "The Vanity of Human Wishes". A complex man - was born the son of a bookseller in Lichfield, Staffordshire, on September 18th. 1709. He was blind in one eye, scarred on the lower part of his face, and a lifelong martyr to both emphysema and depression - (the latter affliction he termed 'the Black Dog'.) However, this was the most wonderful and inspiring feat of lexicography and here in the museum, two facsimile editions are left out for visitors to browse through. It was in this house that labour on the famous dictionary began; Johnson, in his powdered peruke, working at an "old crazy deal table" while perched on a three-legged chair propped against the wall to stop it from toppling over..how endearingly eccentric. But, as I sat there, leafing through this tome, it occured to me how the humble dictionary is one of the most significant objects we are every likely to hold. It defines and catalogues....everything: Every word we ever use Every word we never use Every thought we've ever had, Every dream we've not yet dreamt, Every endeavour - every belief, Every journey we have yet to take, Every component of life - and afterlife, Every vowel, every consonant..every silence, What has passed - what will pass, The aspirations of every sentient being who has ever lived or yet to live. It was said, that in the beginning was 'The Word' and I rather believe, that, when all is said and done, a word will be all that remains.
