Canvases from the three Tjapaltjarri brothers; Thomas, Warlimpirrnga and Walala. They are members of a Pintupi family of hunter-gatherers who grew up on the western side of Lake Mackay in the Gibson Desert in the centre of Australia. Today they are all famous artists but they were originally famous for being members of a family living a traditional, nomadic life with no contact with the ‘western’ world until late into the 20th century. It was not until 1984 that they first saw a white man. Warlimpirrnga remembers "I couldn't believe it. I thought he was a devil, a bad spirit. He was the colour of clouds at sunrise." The three brothers paint their Tingari, or secret men's business, and each has a very distinct method to express the unique and sacred stories that centre around their family's history, life and ancestry. #australianindigenousart #aboriginalart #painting #easterndesertart #history #desertart #centralaustralia #tingariarts
